Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010
Windsor Utilities Commission made the commitment to become one of the
first utilities in the province to achieve the internationally
recognized Health & Safety Standard, OHSAS 18001.
OHSAS 18001 is designed to help organizations formulate Occupational Health & Safety policies and objectives. It was first released and revised in 2007, and is the world's most recognized framework for Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems. It is applicable to any organization, large or small, and within any business sector. OHSAS 18001 is largely aligned with the structure of ISO 14001 and is based on the two concepts continual improvement and regulatory compliance.
The OHSAS 18001 certification system was created by an association of national standard and certification bodies/registrars, and specialist consultancies. OHSAS 18001 certification proves that your management system has been measured against a best practice standard and found to be compliant. The certificate is issued by a third party accreditation body/registrar. This certificate lets employees and other stakeholders know that you proactively protect the Health & Safety of your work force.
AQA International was selected as our external auditor. Over a period of five days, WUC policies/procedures and documents were reviewed. Interviews with WUC management as well as Bargaining Unit employees were conducted to ensure WUC's commitment to Health & Safety. Following this extensive audit, WUC was recommended for certification to the OHSAS 18001 Standard.
